Mentoring taught me to focus more deeply on the people I was mentoring. I thought and talked more in terms of their careers as a whole and less about their short term benefit to my operating unit.

It made me a more altruistic manager and led to much stronger relationships with mentees. They also became more loyal and responsive in turn. It was win-win.
