I agree that tragedy drives people to find deeper meaning in their lives.

From both experience and people I have known, I must question research that says intensely positive experiences have as much meaning and impact as intensely negative experiences.

Anyone who thinks a birth or wedding is equal in meaning to tragedy probably hasn’t had a serious tragedy. Try spending time with a parent who has lost a child to suicide.

Tragedy has much more impact. Besides, we are biologically wired to respond more to pain than pleasure as a survival mechanism.
